Thinking it was my child at uni, I started chatting with them for a bit. Then they said, "Mum, I'm on the phone with the bank right now because something's weird with my online banking. I'll catch up with you later." A bit later, they messaged again with, "Mum, are you free? I'm really stressed and hate to bother you, but I need some help." Next came, "I bought something using Afterpay, and luckily the order arrived. But now I have an invoice that needs paying today, and though I want to pay, my credit card won’t work for 24 hours on the new phone number. Could you put the payment through for me? I’ll pay you back on Monday, it’s about £1650." I started grilling them with questions! They said, "It’s Apple products, I got them, but can’t pay right now. Could you pay it for me online, please, Mum?" I agreed and they sent payment details for £1650 to someone called C Ngindu. Immediately after I told them I needed to talk because I felt it might be a scam, the account details vanished.
