I assumed it was my child away at university, so we had a bit of a chat. Then I got, "Hold on, I’m on the phone with the bank at the moment; my online banking is playing up. Speak soon!" Later on, I got another message: "Mum, are you free now? I’m feeling really overwhelmed and hate asking you, but I need your help." The messages continued: "I made a purchase using Afterpay and thankfully, the items have already arrived. However, I've received an invoice due today. I want to pay it straight away, but I'm having issues because my credit card won’t work for a full day after changing my number! Could you transfer £1650 into my account now, and I promise to refund you by Monday?" I probed a bit more with questions. They explained, "I bought some Apple gear and thankfully received everything. I just need to settle the payment, but I can’t do it online myself, Mum, please help me out." I agreed, and they sent over the payment info, which was to someone named C Ngindu for £1650. I then messaged back, saying, "I need to discuss this further with you, as I’m worried it might not be legitimate." Almost immediately, their bank details vanished.
