Today, my wife received a rather alarming phone call from a number purporting to belong to the Legal Case Department of HMRC. The caller, who introduced herself as Veronica Ovens, took on an extremely menacing tone, insisting that unless she paid a substantial amount immediately, she would be arrested within half an hour. They even provided a supposed arrest warrant number, which the police confirmed was non-existent. She was bombarded with threats of tax evasion, fraud, and money laundering, being told that her passport and bank accounts were at risk of being frozen. To add to the intimidation, they mentioned that if she didn’t settle out of court, a Judge might demand nearly £96,000 from her. It was particularly unsettling how they already had her full name and address, and they insisted that if she tried to contact HMRC, they wouldn’t assist her, claiming only the caller could provide any answers.

Got a call from this number earlier today. A lady's voice said something about "HMRC taking legal action against you, press 1 to talk to your case officer." I pressed 1 but the line went dead. Having worked at HMRC before, I know they don’t reach out like this - it’s usually by letter, a direct phone call from a landline, or in rare cases, email if that’s what you've agreed to. When I called 1471, the number showed up as 0753 7130 915. HMRC wouldn’t be using a mobile number to call people. Definitely scammers, no doubt about it.

Got a robocall on my landline, sounded just like what others described; supposedly HMRC chasing a case or something. I got a call with no hello or anything, so I thought it was one of those robo calls. The woman, who spoke really softly, said something like, "This is an official call from HMRC about a XX being filed against you."
