I was setting up a gmail account and suddenly it wanted me to scan a QR code on my phone, which seemed a bit off. After scanning, it then asked me to send a text message somewhere strange. When the number popped up, I decided not to send anything. Judging by what others have said, this might actually be some kind of scam or maybe a hacking attempt. Definitely felt sketchy to me.

I had to text this number when setting up a Google Account, which surprised me since I assumed Google was fully on board with RCS. Not sure why they don't just send verification codes through the official verified Google contact in Google Messages (some codes come from there and have a tick). Because of that, I’ll rate it as neutral rather than safe.

If you enable RCS chat options in the Google Messages app settings, it will send a verification text to Google automatically. It's completely safe, just a routine check when you switch on that feature. No need to worry about it at all.
