Got a message like all of you, saying the usual stuff. I replied asking who it was, but after a quick Google search I went straight to blocking the number. Fingers crossed I didn’t fall for some dodgy scam. Anyone else know what happens if you reply to these messages? Are they trying to scam us or what? Appreciate all your replies - it’s really useful, especially for folks who might be more at risk. Cheers!

Just after I put up a listing on Gumtree, got a text saying something like “#item posted for free on gumtree# - Hi #my name#, is this item still up for grabs? Thought you might want to share it with more folks nearby #town# :)” It felt a bit off so I looked up the number on Google and found this site. Pretty sure they’re trying to get me to pay to list it somewhere else, nah, not falling for that!

I've seen similar messages before. Cheers for everyone posting their thoughts. Whenever I get a text from an unknown number, I make sure to look it up. Getting messages like these is really irritating.

About 20 minutes after I put up my concert tickets on Gumtree, I got the exact same message as a bunch of others have mentioned. Followed the tips from earlier comments and just blocked the number straight away.

Today I put up an ad on Gumtree and not long after got a message asking if the item was still available. They sent me a link to a different selling app and said I could share it about Ebbw Vale. I’m a vulnerable adult with special needs, so this kind of rubbish really isn’t needed. Honestly, I’d appreciate people not messing about like this. Thanks anyway, goodbye.

I put up an advert on Gumtree and almost straight away I started getting odd texts - like one said "Is this dress still available? I can arrange to pick it up in (town)" and another one asked if I was a model. Then there was a random call at about 2am, which was pretty creepy. Plus, I got emails from some people offering to pay way over the price if a courier could just collect the item from my place. Honestly, it felt quite dodgy, so watch out if you’re selling stuff on there.

I got called twice from this number. I replied the first time but ignored the second. Seems like it's one of those places where texting back costs an absolute fortune!

Right after I posted an ad on Gumtree, I got the same kind of message. Foolishly, I replied thinking it was genuine. Then they sent me a response like, "Great :) Just takes a moment to also add your listing on the free Village app ([#]village[###]/home) - shout if you need any help?" Turns out it’s just a trick to get you to use yet another selling platform.

A few hours after you lot posted, I got the very same text. I immediately googled it and stumbled upon this chat. Cheers to everyone for sharing what happened! Honestly, it made me feel quite uneasy when I first saw it.

I had a similar experience to Lisa. I put up an ad on Gumtree, and this individual reached out to see if the item was still for sale. I highly advise against responding with a simple "yes" or anything that might be interpreted as positive. It opens the door for your number to be misused for scam calls. I've made that blunder once, and it spun into a barrage of relentless calls from supposed car insurance agents, claiming I’d had recent accidents. Utter nonsense! I knew right away it was a scam, especially since I've never even held a driving licence.

Posted an ad on Gumtree today and got the exact same text: "Hey ####### is this still available? Thought be helpful to share it with more people around ######" - and yeah, the grammar was totally off. Pretty sure it’s some kind of bot or scammer.

On 13th Jan 2018, I got this exact message. I shot back with ‘do I know you?’ but never got anything back!

I placed an advertisement on Gumtree and received a message inquiring if the item was still available. I confirmed that it was, and then the individual suggested I list it on their website, www.village.co/home, as it’s apparently local to Timperley, where I'm situated. When I clicked the link, it directed me to the App Store, which struck me as odd. I exited the app, thinking perhaps I’d pressed the wrong button, but upon attempting to access it again, the link seemed faulty. Just now, I tried it out once more and, surprisingly, it was functioning. The person mentioned they could assist if needed, but upon informing them of the broken link, I haven’t heard back. Could this all be an attempt to scam me?

Just posted an ad on Gumtree and about 20 minutes later got the same text message. Gumtree’s meant to be open as is, so why are they stepping in and who else are they sending this info to? Didn't bother replying to the message.

I put an ad up on Gumtree and got a message back with the item details repeated, followed by “Hi [my name], is this still up for grabs? Figured it’d be good to spread it to folks around [my town] :)”. Turns out loads of others are getting the same text from a different phone number. Best not to answer, it’s a scam!
