Really was E.On. Got a message saying they were coming to swap out my smart meter since I told them it wasn’t working properly. They arrived and changed it, now everything’s fine. On the 24th of December 2020, I got in touch with EON via email because I’m one of their customers and I’d received a text about some issue with my direct debit. I was worried it might be a scam. They replied saying thanks for sending over the number and details from the message. Then, just today, the 29th of December 2020, I got another email from them confirming the text was legit and really came from EON.

Eon rang me the other day, they’ve accidentally taken my direct debit early because of a problem with their system. I’m not totally convinced this text is really from Eon. When I checked their website, it says they usually just email customers and always use your name. Also, they never ask you to send any info since they already have it on file. So this message feels a bit dodgy to me. I can confirm that the issue mentioned in the message is real. On E.on’s Twitter, they mentioned there was a glitch that led to some direct debits being collected earlier than usual - and I’m a customer who’s been caught up in it. This number has been linked to Eon for some time now. Apparently, due to a glitch on their part, around 1.5 million people had their direct debits withdrawn up to two weeks earlier than they should’ve been. They’re only just starting to inform customers about it. You’d think this would be massive news, but it got completely overshadowed by the Brexit Deal coverage. Eon’s reputation has taken a big hit over this, and I hope the regulator comes down hard on them. If you pay Eon by direct debit, it’s definitely worth double-checking your bank statements.
