i got a recorded call from a bloke speaking with a posh bbc accent claiming to be from hmrc. he said there were major errors in my tax return and warned me i'd risk losing my national insurance number and having my passport taken off me. the message told me to press 1 to sort it out. lots of folks would find that really scary and intimidating. luckily, since i do tax returns for work, i knew straight away it was a con, but i can see how others might get fooled.
