Like others have mentioned, it’s one of those recorded HMRC scams. I recently switched my phone number as well, and it’s clear that some automated system is just calling random UK landlines till someone picks up. Now that my new number’s active, I reckon it’ll just get passed on to more scammers, and the annoying calls will start all over again. Think I’ll need to look into call blocking or something like that soon.

Someone rang me claiming to be from HMRC, saying they’d been trying to reach me and this was their final call. They gave some reference like V1169 1/2015 and told me to ring back on 07460132756, which funny enough was the number that called me. I’m based in the 01253 area, just a few miles from Blackpool Tower. It’s obvious a scam because HMRC never contacts people like this - they always use proper post, addressing you with your national insurance number or your HMRC reference if you file a tax return. Please don’t call that number back!!

Got a call at 8.46 this morning, the person on the other end was rattling off some ID numbers and said they were calling from the Inland Revenue's investigation team. I ended it straight away because I know HMRC don’t carry out business like that over the phone. Definitely felt like a scam to me.

You can tell right away it's a scam if you listen to the entire message. I decided to ring the number back and a guy with a Nigerian accent picked up. I told him exactly what I thought about him and his crew, but he didn’t say a word. Believe it or not, he actually hung up on me, which honestly gave me a bit of satisfaction.
