After putting up an ad on Gumtree about wanting to rent a place, I got a text just like the one mentioned above.

Got a message from this person who also sent a bunch of emails. They asked for a deposit upfront before I could even see the place, and they’d got my details from Gumtree. I was just about to arrange a viewing when they demanded the deposit first. Really relieved I didn’t fall for it, but I hope nobody else gets caught out by this.

I received a message about a house for rent as well. The email they gave was [email protected]. I shot them an email but never got a reply. Tried ringing the number but no one picked up, it went straight to voicemail with an American accent, which felt a bit off for here in the UK. The email was shown like this: lewinsand55 at gmail dot com. Looking back, it does seem a bit sketchy.

I got a text from this number about a house rental, asking me to send my email. When I tried calling back, it just went straight to voicemail and nobody picked up. Sounds like the person on the other end might be from the US, from what I can tell.
