5 yearsI recently encountered a rather alarming pop-up supposedly originating from Microsoft, claiming that my computer had been compromised by some nefarious Trojan malware. It was alarmingly convincing and I was unable to close it, so I decided to investigate the phone number that appeared, which turned out to be completely unrecognised. I am well aware that Microsoft would never provide contact numbers like that, so I decided to shut down my computer entirely, temporarily frozen all my bank accounts, and then rang the number. A voice with a distinct foreign accent instructed me to click on my Windows screen, assuring me they'd guide me through the steps to secure my system using my keyboard.
