Then they wanted to move the chat over to WhatsApp to make things seem more personal and build trust by talking about all sorts of stuff. After they gained my confidence, they started trying to scam me, often pushing some dodgy online crypto trading scheme.

Right after I paid my credit card bill, I got a text saying the payment was declined. I replied asking if it was me, and they said yes, but didn’t explain anything else. Weirdly, they already had all the details about what I’d bought.

This number called me claiming it was from Peoples Energy, saying they were the cheapest deal around and mentioned Martin Lewis had rated them highly. I checked Martin Lewis’s site myself and there’s no sign of Peoples Energy being listed at all. When I asked repeatedly why I wasn’t interested in cheap energy, they kept pushing. Also, I found out Peoples Energy had a big data leak back in Dec 2020, which makes me think this could be fraudsters using their name to scam people. So watch out if you get a cold call from this number saying it’s Peoples Energy - I doubt it’s legit!
