Someone rang pretending to be from HMRC, telling me there was a warrant out for tax fraud, that I'd end up in the newspapers, and it would mess with my mortgage application. They said they’d been trying to reach me but only had an old address. Then they insisted I needed to pay two sums by bank transfer straight away to sort it. I was seriously stressed and almost went to pay until they mentioned a person’s name instead of just HMRC. Be careful, they really panic you into making mistakes.

Sounds like an insurance fraud call. They asked if I was still covering my life insurance because of Covid-19. I just replied, “Yes, all good thanks.” He got all quiet, probably because I messed up his spiel. Then he said sorry and ended the call.
