Looks like these folks are operating out of India and somehow trick quite a few gullible people into handing over cash, making it a pretty lucrative scam. Even though many try, it’s not easy to get the Indian officials to step in. Still, I’d say it’s worth flagging it up to HMRC as a phishing case.

Got a ring from this number claiming to be HMRC 😂 They said I was about to be nicked for dodging tax, but apparently, the "auction" wouldn't happen until after we finished chatting. They gave me 45 minutes to cough up nearly 4 grand or the police would be round in 30 minutes. Fair enough, guess I’ll just make a brew and wait it out. Cheers for the warning, total muppet!

Got a message on my answerphone from 07366 524483, they left a number to ring them back. Just recently the tax office contacted me about owing me some money within the next few weeks, so I thought it was connected. But then they mentioned tax fraud which instantly made me suspicious. Definitely a scam. Blocked the number straight away and kept the voicemail just in case.
