When I answered and said hi, it really came across as being from some sort of call centre.

Got a robo call from a number saying it was HMRC, telling me they've sent me a letter and that legal stuff is about to happen. They wanted me to press #1 to talk to someone. I had a look on the official HMRC site and it says they never do automated calls like that. Pretty obvious scam from this number.
