Today I got a call from this number claiming that HMRC had issued a warrant for my arrest over tax evasion. They said I'd need to ring them back to avoid trouble. The message was automated, and the voice sounded like a British man. Actually, this was the second call of this kind I received within about 10 minutes - the first was also automated but with a female American voice. I found this latest call way more believable. It’s quite upsetting how many folks might actually believe these scams.

Thing is, the number given to return the call was way too short to be legit. I got suspicious and looked it up here, and yep, it’s a scam for sure. The tax office always sends official letters in the post, not random calls like this. I had a similar thing happen before with an email, so I phoned the authorities. They confirmed they don’t make calls first, only letters. Be careful, folks!

This was so sketchy, just a heads up it’s a total scam. They ring you up saying you’ve got an arrest warrant and demand money over the phone via credit card to avoid being arrested. They try to pressure you into some deal where you pay up and they won’t send the cops. I don’t owe any taxes or anything, so it made zero sense.
