Just got a call from 07307 216176, and honestly, it’s probably the zillionth time I’ve had a voicemail from some dodgy HMRC scam since last year. I just got a call from someone claiming to be from the HMRC’s Criminal Investigation Department. They told me to press 1. When I did, I was connected to a man with an accent from South India/Bengal. He asked for my name, but when he said mine back to me, he spelt it wrong. That’s when I knew it was fishy. The accent didn’t really tip me off - I’m not exactly sure where most companies have their call centres - but the misspelling of my name made it obvious.
