7 yearsOn the 25th of September around 2.30pm, I got a call on my landline. It started with an automated voice saying it was from Open Reach and that urgent action was needed, telling me to press 1 to talk to an operator. When I did, I got through to a man who sounded Asian. He said he was from Open Reach and warned me my internet would be cut off in a day unless I acted quickly because they supposedly had evidence of illegal activity from overseas trying to hack into my account. He even knew my name and my internet provider, asked how many devices I had connected to my router and about the lights blinking on it. When he asked me to open my laptop and answer some security questions, I just hung up. It struck me as odd because normally only your internet provider would disconnect your service, not some random caller. But I can see how people might get tricked by hearing that urgent warning and end up giving access to their computer.
