Fortunately, I eventually became wary and hung up the phone before divulging any information.
My suspicions were later confirmed when I came across this website. Additionally, when I reported the incident to Action Fraud, they listed a similar scam involving individuals pretending to be bank representatives asking for account numbers.
They claim to be representatives of Lloyds, informing you that someone has been attempting to access your online banking account. They then proceed to request that you update your account information with them. Eventually, they will ask for your account number and potentially gather additional personal details from you.
Fortunately, I became aware of their schemes and promptly hung up the phone without disclosing any sensitive information.
My suspicions were confirmed when I discovered this fraudulent website. Additionally, when I reported the incident to Action Fraud, it was revealed that there have been similar scams where individuals pose as bank representatives and ask for customers' account numbers.
They claimed to be Lloyds, but upon further investigation and contacting Lloyds directly, I realized they were not genuine. This alerted me to the deceptive nature of the situation.
Yesterday, I received a text that appeared to be from Lloyds Bank, notifying me of a change in my phone number. To be sure, I decided to call the bank directly and they confirmed that this was indeed a scam.
Under no circumstances should you contact the number provided in the message.
I managed to speak to a Lloyds customer service representative who confirmed that it was a scammer impersonating the fraud department using a cloned phone number.
The scammer asked me for the following information:
- details of a recent transaction
- the amount of money in my account
- the number of accounts I held with Lloyds Bank
They claimed that my account had been compromised through a 'Samsung or similar device.' This raised suspicions and I immediately realized it was illegitimate, so I promptly ended the call. Upon dialing the number back, I discovered that the voicemail system sounded identical to the genuine Lloyds banking menu system.
