This is Siemens here. Just a heads up, you’re not required to have a smart meter, but some energy deals offer prices only if you have one fitted (this will be clearly mentioned in the terms before you accept the plan). So if you pick a tariff with a certain rate, you’re basically agreeing to get a smart meter. If you later decide against installing it, the energy provider CAN LEGALLY increase your tariff price to what it would be without the smart meter deal.

I really wish these calls would cease! As a person with a disability, I find these continual interruptions rather unwelcome. I've invested in a call blocker, but since a few pals prefer to keep their numbers private, it's not a complete solution.

Like some other folks mentioned, it’s Siemens calling for First Utility regarding a smart meter fitting. They’re installing SMETS1 meters, and if you decide to switch energy providers later, you’ll have to get a new one again. The newer SMETS2 meters don’t have this problem, so I’m holding off till those are more widely available - plus, I actually work for the company developing the SMETS2 communication hubs and setup.

Hi, I’ve received a couple of calls this morning but didn’t pick up. The last time I did, about three months ago, it was Siemens about the smart meter. I told them I wasn’t interested since I read my meters myself. They said I have to have one by 2020, but I’ll wait until then and only if they sort out any problems first. Also got another letter from them earlier this week. For now, I’m just gonna ignore all their calls!

Answered the phone but no sound on the other end. If it’s Siemens calling, I’ve already made it clear I don’t want a smart meter. I’m fine checking my own meter and figuring out my bills myself. There’s been plenty of bad press about smart meters charging people way too much, so I’m not interested until those problems are sorted. I can wait till 2020 for that. This now feels like harassment since I told Siemens not to get in touch until then and they should have that on record. Number’s blocked now.

Got a ring from Seimens about a letter I got about upgrading to smart meters, apparently for First Utility. I told them I’d heard on Radio 4 Money Box that these smart meters might not work with new networks and might have to be swapped out again soon. So, I said we’d hold off and wait for the next version. The bloke was fine with that and said he’d take us off their calling list.

I got two voicemail messages in a couple of weeks saying they called about a First Utility letter about swapping meters. Thing is, I’ve never got any letter from First Utility, so I’m a bit iffy about calling back. Feels like it could be a scam trying to get you to agree to something dodgy. I reckon First Utility ought to put out a warning about this or at least let their customers know if it’s legit or not.

This was a legit call about switching over to a smart meter for electricity. You’re not forced to get one yet (they’re not compulsory), but if your energy company rings to say your old meter has to be swapped out, it’s worth paying attention. Ignoring warnings about potential safety issues could mess up your insurance if anything bad happens.
