I just had a chat with the debt recovery squad from HSBC about some money I apparently owe.

Received a call claiming to be from HSBC. When asked for my postcode, I gave it without hesitation. But then they wanted my date of birth, which I refused to give. I asked if there was any other way to confirm my identity, but they insisted on the DOB. I wasn’t prepared to share that with some stranger calling me from who knows where. They told me to ring the bank using the number on the back of my card. When I asked if the call had anything to do with my recent application for XXX, they wouldn’t confirm or deny, just said they couldn't share details without confirming my identity first - seemed a bit dodgy to me. A couple of days later, the same number rang again. I ignored it this time and got a voicemail which was just a click and hang up. Checked my online HSBC messages and there’s no record of them trying to get in touch. Seems a bit fishy, especially after reading about others having similar calls.

Got a call from this number at 8:10 in the morning. Tried ringing back and an automated voice said they wouldn't open until 9.

Some bloke rang saying he was from HD+SBC, tried to get my details but I refused. He told me to ring HSBC myself, so I did. Of course, HSBC had no clue about any calls to me. Total scam!

Got a ring from this number on the 23rd of September. It sounded dodgy right away, so I just hung up. The caller claimed to be from HSBC and seemed quite professional at first. Best watch out for it!
