Got a call earlier today from someone with a thick foreign accent, couldn't make out much. They claimed I owed money to HMRC and asked me to ring them back. Since I know I don’t owe HMRC anything, I’m not bothering to call them back. They’ve called before using different numbers too. It’s a pain having to look up who it's from every time, but better safe than sorry. Definitely smells like a scam to me.

About half an hour back, I dropped a note here. The caller had really bad English and left a voicemail saying I owed money to HMRC, which isn’t right at all. After I posted my comment, I looked up the real HMRC number - it’s 0300. This is clearly a scam and a pain in the neck. However, after logging into my HMRC account, I found that there's absolutely nothing outstanding, nor have I received any correspondence from them. I received a call earlier today from an automated system that inquired about some business issue and instructed me to press 1 to talk to an agent, which I did. A chap eventually answered, claiming to represent a company he referred to as LCF (or something similar) and mentioned they operate on behalf of clients. However, he insisted that without answering a series of data protection questions, he couldn’t proceed with our conversation. I replied, “Of course, but could you furnish me with your full name, address, date of birth, and National Insurance number, seeing as I'm unfamiliar with your firm?” He only provided me with his first name and flatly refused to divulge any further details! When I pressed him for the data protection checks, he stated that he couldn’t continue unless I complied, and promptly cut the call.

I didn’t pick up cause I didnt know the number. Kinda weird that now they are using 0345 numbers since they look proper official. Also, when the caller has a well spoken English accent (like none of the usual Indian voice with a really unlikely English name), chances are it’s a pre-recorded message or maybe an AI bot that just reads from set scripts. If you try to say something unexpected, it’ll either just keep repeating or hang up. Honestly best option is to not say anything at all. If the message repeats itself, you know it’s just a recording.

I told her no, and she reckoned the post must have been held up because of the strikes.
