Experian isn’t actually free, it charges you about £14.99 every month. Sometimes, if a company’s customer data gets leaked or swiped and ends up on the dark web, that company might give its customers a year or two of free Experian Identity Plus to help protect them from any problems that come up.

29.05.24 - Just got a long email claiming to be from my pension company. Something felt off straight away becasue there was this odd mistake, like a lowercase letter where normally it’s upper case in their past emails. They were asking me to sign up to Experian and gave the number 03444818182. So I looked up the number on “Who called me from this number” and turns out it’s a scam!

I got an email from a company I'd bought stuff off recently, saying they'd had a data breach and my credit card info plus other details might be at risk. The message was pretty believable and mentioned that Experian would provide free protection for a year if I rang this number before a certain deadline. The whole thing was quite an elaborate and sneaky scam. Later that day, I also got a call about my credit card - another boring hassle!
