I got passed along from someone with an Indian accent to another bloke speaking English who claimed to be in Brighton. He called me by the wrong name, but I guessed straight away it was a scam, so I just played along to try and waste his time. Is that a bit mean? He kept chatting for around ten minutes before asking me to confirm my bank info. When I told him I wasn’t comfortable sharing that, he tried to convince me it was all safe. Yeah, right! That’s when I ended the call. Honestly, I felt good about wasting some of his time - felt like a small win!

Not sure how this happened, but charges have shown up on our bill for this number.

I got a phone call from someone claiming they were from the firm that looks after my washing machine. They told me I needed to set up my direct debit again, even though I had actually stopped it back in December 2020 for a bunch of reasons. The person was really courteous and sounded convincing. They kept trying to reassure me that handing over my bank details wouldn’t let them just take money, since my bank would have to get my okay first.

Got a call saying my washing machine’s service warranty had run out and I needed to renew it? Felt a bit dodgy to me.

Got a call today from someone calling himself "Adam Kerry" from a place called "Service Home Plan," supposedly the "Domestic Appliance Dept." He spoke with a heavy Indian accent and insisted he was following up about my washing machine insurance renewal - he rattled off a policy number 44991VEN. Thing is, I don’t have any such insurance at all, so right off the bat it sounded dodgy. He then went on to say this "policy" covers other appliances too, named Hotpoint for the fridge, Canon for the cooker and microwave, but when I asked about the TV, he got all wishy-washy and said the make didn’t matter since it was “included free.” That’s where I knew it was total rubbish - none of my kitchen appliances are Hotpoint or Canon, and I’m not daft enough to pay for pricey insurance on any of them. He also claimed I paid them £349 last year with a card starting “44” - clever tactic that one to sound legit. When he quoted a yearly fee of £284, I told him I needed to check with my son, hoping to delay or drop him. Seriously, have you ever heard of insurance costs dropping by £65 for no reason? Me neither. He said paperwork and a bill would arrive by post, but he never asked for my address, so maybe he bailed thinking I wasn’t a mark. In all, a total scam - I wasted a good 15 minutes of his time and am hoping that means one less person falling for this today.
