I received a call from this number and was initially greeted by someone with a distinctly Indian accent. Then the line switched to a chap with an English twang claiming to be in Brighton. He mistakenly called me by the wrong name, but sensing it was a potential scam, I decided to play along just to pass the time. Is that a bit naughty of me? I managed to keep him on the line for at least ten minutes until he asked me to verify my bank details. When I expressed my reluctance to provide that sort of information, he attempted to reassure me that it was all above board. Really? At that point, our little chat came to a close. At least I managed to waste his time, which feels like a bit of a triumph, doesn’t it?

Not sure how this happened, but charges have shown up on our bill for this number.

I got a phone call from someone claiming they were from the firm that looks after my washing machine. They told me I needed to set up my direct debit again, even though I had actually stopped it back in December 2020 for a bunch of reasons. The person was really courteous and sounded convincing. They kept trying to reassure me that handing over my bank details wouldn’t let them just take money, since my bank would have to get my okay first.

I've just received a notification stating that my washing machine service plan has lapsed and requires renewal. Is this really necessary?

Today, I had a rather peculiar call from one "Adam Kerry," who apparently works in the "Domestic Appliance Department" for "Service Home Plan." He spoke with a rather thick Indian accent and insisted he was reaching out regarding the renewal of my washing machine insurance (covering both parts and labour). He quoted me a policy number, 44991VEN, which struck me as highly dubious. *** I can categorically state that I do not possess such a policy. Initially, he spoke solely about the washing machine insurance, but then claimed that the "policy" also included coverage for four additional appliances. Naturally, when I pressed him for details about the makes and models covered, he mentioned "Hotpoint" for a fridge and "Canon" for both the cooker and microwave. Then he became somewhat evasive when it came to the TV, insisting that it was included complimentary, so it didn't matter what brand it was. *** This is utterly laughable; I don’t own a single appliance from Hotpoint or Canon in my kitchen, and I would never entertain spending money on an overpriced insurance policy for any of them. He went on to assert that I had forked out £349 to "Service Home Plan" last year (a complete fabrication!) and mentioned a card that begins with "44." *** Oh, how clever of him - as if that doesn’t apply to countless cards! When he laid out the costs for renewal (£284 for one year), I conveniently said I’d need to confer with my son, subtly suggesting I’m losing my grip on my finances. *** Has anyone ever encountered a situation where insurance premiums drop by £65 purely out of benevolence from the insurer? Certainly not, in my experience! He then claimed that paperwork, including an invoice, would be dispatched to me via post. *** Strangely enough, he didn’t bother to confirm my address, so perhaps he decided I wasn't worth the effort anymore. *** We shall see what transpires next. *** It's abundantly clear this was a scam call, and I take some satisfaction in having wasted 15 minutes of his time. Perhaps that means one less unwitting victim today?
