British Gas rang me up about my tariff. They asked me to confirm my postcode because of GDPR rules that kicked in on 25th May. Basically, they can’t change anything on your account over the phone unless they’re sure they’re talking to the right person - it’s the law now, just have a quick look online! I spoke to a really nice lady who explained two different tariffs I could switch to and helped me make the change. She had access to all my info that British Gas holds. I only gave her my postcode, nothing else. The next day I got an email from British Gas confirming everything.

This number has rung me loads of times the past few days. I figured it looked dodgy. I picked up this morning and some bloke pretending to be from British Gas was on the line, trying to sell me a “better deal” claiming I was being overcharged. I told him I have a smart meter so my bills should already be lower. He then said the smart meter was just so I could track my usage, not actually to reduce costs. I was reading these comments while on the call, and that’s when I got certain it was a scam, so I said no thanks and hung up.

Got a call from 033332029573 claiming to be British Gas, saying they wanted to talk about my account and needed to verify security questions. They asked for the last part of my postcode, but I told them they must already know it and that I didn’t think it was really British Gas. Then they just hung up. I rang British Gas and they had no record of anyone trying to contact me. Also reported the number to BT who advised me to block it. Definitely a scam, don’t share any details and always double check with British Gas yourself.

Wow, this is exactly like the HMRC frauds! They always reach out through letters (Royal Mail) and NEVER ring you up. Just end the call straight away or if you pick up, say something like “Hello, police Cyber Crime Unit, how can I assist you?”
