Some bloke said he was calling from Ovo Energy about fitting smart meters. He insisted I had to book an appointment straight away during the call. When I tried to hang up, he got quite pushy. There's always a chance OVO’s data could’ve been compromised, and if I’d gone along with it, they might’ve tried to get my personal details. Actually, I also got a call from them the day before, on the 12th November at 1.45 in the afternoon. I've complained about this number previously. So, I got a call yesterday from someone saying they were with Ovo, telling me my electric meter had expired and I needed a smart meter fitted. I’d already looked it up on the government site and my meter’s certificate is good till 2027. Since I rent the place, I told them to get in touch with the landlords. They claimed they didn’t have their contact info, which sounded dodgy to me. I said I'd let my landlords know and they could get in touch with Ovo themselves. Then they just hung up on me. Not long after, the same number called again, so I just blocked it.

Best advice for anyone picking up an phone you weren’t expecting; don’t share any personal info or agree to anything from random calls. You’ll get scammed for sure if you do that. If you’re thinking about a smart meter, only arrange it through your online account. Always ask loads of questions too. What if something goes pear-shaped? This goes for that little monitor thingy that shows you the electric cost every time you flick a switch too.
