I received a call from 0330 117 0398 at precisely 10:20am on the 2nd of August 2022. Right before the connection was made, there was that telltale pause that screams 'scam alert'. A chap with a South African lilt introduced himself, claiming to represent a repair service. I cut him off, firmly stating I had no intention of falling for any trickery, and hung up. Almost immediately, he rang me again-this time, no pesky pause-insisting he was there to assist, not to deceive. He claimed, "I've been sent to assist you with your social housing repairs, and I have your address as [correct address]." Almost had me second-guessing, since there is indeed a repair job pending at my property. However, I decided to play the confused card, asking him for clarification in the hope that he'd reveal which agency had supposedly sent him. He stuck to his rehearsed lines and, strangely, he ended the call himself! Clearly shifty. On top of that, I use the Truecaller app on my mobile, which warns me if incoming calls are flagged as scams. It identifies 0330 117 0398 as a "Notorious spammer - Life insurance."

SOCIAL CARE HOUSING MAINTENANCE TEAM. THEY CALLED SAYING THE PLACE I LIVE IN (WHICH I ACTUALLY DON'T RENT) HAS SOME PENDING REPAIRS AND OFFERED TO SORT THEM OUT. I SAID THAT SOUNDS GOOD 'CAUSE MY PARTNER IS NOT THE BEST AT COMPLETING JOBS. THEN SHE ASKED ME TO CONFIRM IF I WAS RENTING THE PROPERTY. WHEN I SAID NO, SHE SAID THEY CAN'T ASSIST ME AND JUST CUT THE CALL. HOW BLOODY RUDE!

The first time I picked up, they claimed to be from social housing, but when I checked with the local housing office, they said no one was doing surveys.

They called me, and after missing two calls, I thought it was from the housing association repair team I’d been expecting. I ended up answering loads of questions for my mum about her kitchen. But then I got suspicious when he asked for the postcode. I told him the housing association would already have that info, and then he told me my postcode, which he shouldn’t have known since I don’t live in a housing association home. He got pushy when I hesitated to share it, and I got all flustered asking things back. I just hung up and blocked the number after that.

A woman said she was from the housing repairs dept, ringing to make sure we’ve got no problems with our place. She seemed to know stuff before I told her anything. Then she said someone else would ring back about another issue, but I said no, and she just kept going on, saying an appointment was already set and they’d be in touch. This number rings me a lot, but it didn’t sound right to me.

The caller asked, “Is Casey Norton there?” Me - “No one with that name here.” Caller then says, “Well, who am I talking to then?” Me - “You’re not really talking to anyone, please take me off your list.” Then I hit play on my PC and blasted the Joe Dolce tune 'Shaddap You Face' right down the phone - they hung up straight away - wonder what gave them the hint!!
