Today, on the 1st of February at precisely 10:21 AM, I came across an email from HMRC that appeared to be quite legitimate. It mentioned something about the SEISS grant and stated that I would need to repay it if I had stopped trading, covering the period from 2018 to 2021. The message included a contact phone number, 0300 322 9430. I can't shake the feeling that this might be a con. Has anyone else encountered a similar situation?

From what I went through with the actual HMRC, one of their managers shared my private information without permission with her boyfriend. He then showed up uninvited at my house making a right nuisance. Shockingly, this HMRC worker got away without any punishment or being held accountable, and HMRC never properly apologised for what happened. Because of that, I'd seriously suggest avoiding any phone calls with HMRC since it’s clear you can't trust their integrity.

I keep getting calls from some bloke called Matthew claiming he’s from HMRC. He rings from a number I don’t recognise about once every day and leaves a message telling me to ring back about some self employment scheme. Proper annoying.

Just got a call from someone pretending to be HMRC, said something about emails I supposedly sent in February, which I never did. They left a voicemail with a reference number. Honestly, sounded pretty clever, like they’re trying to trick folks into a scam.

you really can't trust hmrc with your private info. a senior staff member leaked my personal details to her partner, which caused me loads of stress and problems. hmrc didn’t hold her responsible at all - no investigation, no punishment, not even fired. seriously, avoid calling them on the phone; stick to messaging through the official government site or send letters. they just aren’t reliable.

Today, I received a rather dubious phone call from a bloke purporting to be from HMRC. He informed me that there was a lawsuit looming over me, supposedly sitting right there on his desk. Apparently, he was trying to accuse me of tax evasion! I didn't hesitate to tell him where to shove it-what a total charlatan!
