i got a call sayin it was from hmrc but they never gave me any reference number to check. they gave me a number to ring back, but i’m thinkin that might have been fake just to make it look legit. without a ref number, i couldn’t really get through their automated phone system at all. so, i’m curious what they’ll say when they call again. i had a guy called david call me on thursday and then a woman on friday who wanted me to ring her back straight away.

Beware, this is clearly a fraudulent scheme. The HMRC would always send you a written communication as their initial contact, and they would never resort to making threatening phone calls. It is quite audacious that the scammers even have the audacity to visit this forum and claim authenticity.

We appreciate your comment, Anonymous. It is valuable to hear from someone who is employed by HMRC confirming this phone number as genuine. We apologize for the frustration caused when people are skeptical. However, it is important to acknowledge that HMRC adopts a contact method similar to scammers, which naturally raises suspicions. It is essential to recognize that scammers participate in online forums and may write responses like yours. HMRC should strive to stay ahead of scammers instead of merely catching up with them. Until this progress is achieved, people's skepticism is justified, so we kindly ask for your patience.

Has anyone got the real contact number for HMRC's self assessment? Been trying to reach them but keep finding shady or wrong numbers. Appreciate any help, cheers!

When I initially called HMRC, I had doubts about the authenticity of the phone number provided. The first time I called, they couldn't find any information regarding the number or the previous call. However, I decided to give it another try and called back without realizing that it was the same uncertain number. During that second call, I set up voice ID, and when I spoke to a representative, they were able to provide me with the balance on my account. This gave me some assurance that the call was genuine, especially since they didn't ask for any payment details. I decided to contact HMRC once more using their official number, and this time the voice recognition system was already set up. As a result, I now have confidence that this is indeed a legitimate number.

We recently received a call on our landline, which turned out to be a complete scam. The caller persistently attempted to obtain sensitive information from us, but we insisted that we would contact them the following morning.

This is most certainly a fraudulent scheme. The scammer insisted that I owed taxes from as far back as 2012. I took the initiative to contact HMRC directly (using the official number and not the one the scammer provided) to verify this information. Thankfully, everything was in order and there were no outstanding tax obligations. Please do not be misled by this scam.

DISREGARD ANY posts claiming this number is legitimate, as they are likely written by the scammers themselves. There is NO proof that this is an authentic HMRC contact. If you receive one of these calls and the scammer insists you should dial that number to gain reassurance, DO NOT call it.
