i got a call sayin it was from hmrc but they never gave me any reference number to check. they gave me a number to ring back, but i’m thinkin that might have been fake just to make it look legit. without a ref number, i couldn’t really get through their automated phone system at all. so, i’m curious what they’ll say when they call again. i had a guy called david call me on thursday and then a woman on friday who wanted me to ring her back straight away.

Just to be clear, this is definitely a con. HMRC always contacts you by letter first, they don't ever call and threaten you. What’s worse is these fraudsters even come here pretending it’s real! Don’t fall for it.

Cheers for your input, Anonymous. It’s useful to get a perspective from someone at HMRC confirming that this number is legitimate. I get why it’s annoying that some folks doubt it. The problem is, HMRC's way of calling matches exactly how scammers operate, so it’s no wonder people get suspicious. Just a heads up, scammers often post replies like yours on sites like this, pretending to be official. HMRC really ought to be leading the game, not just trying to keep pace with the scammers. Until that happens, it’s fair that folks stay wary, so please understand where we’re coming from.

They called me, telling me to ring them back and give them some reference number. Quite odd, really.

I just got a call from this number, and it's definitely HMRC - not some kind of scam. Sounds like it's linked to DRT SA or something similar. So yep, legit government call!

Has anyone got the real contact number for HMRC's self assessment? Been trying to reach them but keep finding shady or wrong numbers. Appreciate any help, cheers!

At first, I wasn’t really sure if this number was genuine. The first time I tried calling HMRC back, they couldn't find any record of the call or the number. But then, I gave it another go without realising it might be dodgy. During that call, I ended up setting up voice ID. When I spoke to someone, they could tell me the exact balance on my account, so that made me think it was probably legit. They never asked for any card details or payments either. Later, when I rang HMRC on their official number again, the voice recognition was already set up, which made me pretty confident it’s a proper number after all!

THIS NUMBER BELONGS TO THE REAL HMRC DEBT RESOLUTION TEAM DEALING WITH SELF ASSESSMENT ISSUES. IT’S NOT A FRAUD. Hey Mike, just wondering which part of HMRC you rang? Did they mention the 0300 322 7823? If that's the case, they got it wrong. That number is an official HMRC contact and it's linked to our Debt Resolution Team. Maybe if you phone them up again and let them know this number is listed under 'useful numbers' in the DMcomms SWIs guidance, they'll sort it out properly.

How can you tell it's a scam? Also, what exactly does "speam about details" mean? I'm not quite sure I understand that part.

Our home phone just got a call from these people, total rip off. They kept pushing for info but we told them we’d ring back the next day.

Absolutely a dodgy call. They were claiming I owed tax from as far back as 2012. I rang up HMRC myself (not the number they gave) to double check, and it was all clear. Don't get caught out by this kind of scam!

Ignore any claims saying this number is genuine - those are most likely from the scammers trying to trick you. There’s absolutely no proof that this belongs to HMRC. If you’re ever called and told to ring that number to "make sure," just don’t pick up.

This is a real HMRC phone number. They get in touch with people who might owe tax or who haven't submitted their Tax Returns yet. So, it's basically the team checking if you've got any unpaid taxes or missed filings.

Got a call from this number tonight at about 7:30, saying I owe £3500 in tax. The person on the phone couldn’t give me an email address when I asked, said they don’t use emails. Tried to quote my National Insurance number as a reference but kept stumbling over their words whenever I questioned them. Doesn’t sound very genuine to me, does it?
