Received a couple of phone calls yesterday from this number. A woman on the line insisted she was calling from HMRC. She began asking me to verify my National Insurance number to proceed with some sort of security check. When I asked for her number to verify her legitimacy, I found no record of it anywhere. About half an hour later, I tried calling back, and, rather oddly, it was the same woman again! I mentioned that I couldn’t find details on the number and asked for a letter to be sent instead, to which she agreed. Just a few minutes ago, I dialled the number again, hoping to catch a voicemail or some sort of recorded message to establish its authenticity. Instead, I was met with incessant ringing for three minutes before the call simply cut off. It strikes me as quite unusual for a government agency not to have some form of answering service, especially after hours. I’m increasingly suspicious about this number and, so far, no letter has arrived in the post either.
