My mate got a ring from this number saying she'd been paid too much for the past five years and they wanted to sort out paying it back. It all came across as really fishy to me. The person on the phone only seemed to know her name and her number. They then asked her to confirm her birthday, which she ended up telling them. Now she’s really stressed since she’s barely getting by with what she earns right now.

After that, I dialled 0300-200-3200, the official HMRC number I’m familiar with, and after a bit of waiting, I spoke to someone who confirmed that the original number was legit. So, I rang 03000-543-756 again and it did sound genuine.

I received a phone call from someone purporting to be from HMRC, using the number listed above. She mentioned there was an issue with our payroll and seemed quite keen to gather further details from me. I was hesitant and chose not to divulge any information. Before hanging up, she provided her number for a callback along with a reference number as well.
