They were annoyingly relentless and exceedingly impolite-rang back three times until I finally told them to leave me be! Absolutely ridiculous!!!

Got a call supposedly from EON saying they do meter readings for Scottish Power (not buying it!). They said they messed up some numbers last time and needed to double-check our account and identity - which is odd cause no one ever reads our meter. The call was from an Indian call centre, and they used a different number than the one that showed up. When I asked for a callback number, they gave me some totally different one. Seemed dodgy to me.

Got a call from someone saying they were meter readers from Smart Energy. They told us there was an issue with the postcode linked to our recent meter reading, meaning our bill was off. They wanted us to check an old bill to verify some serial numbers. When I asked for more info, the caller claimed they worked in the meter reading department out of Sheffield. I tried looking up the company and office in Sheffield but couldn't find anything. As soon as I mentioned that, the call just ended. Sounds like a proper scam to me!

Some bloke called claiming to be from SSE, said he wanted to talk to our accounts team about our bills. He reckoned we might be covering someone else’s energy costs because the bills were too expensive. Honestly, who’d imagine an energy firm would be keen to return money? I quickly googled and found this site, then asked for the office address he was ringing from and he just dropped the call.

Got a call from some bloke claiming to be from Octopus Energy, asking about accounts payable. I’ve had similar calls before, and when I checked with Octopus, they said their call centres aren’t even based in India. So I told the guy flat out he wasn’t from Octopus. He insisted he was, so I asked him for the password linked to our account - then he just went silent and hung up on me!

She said there was a mistake on my bill and asked me to confirm my meter number, which she was going to tell me to verify. A bloke rang up saying he was from EDF, SSE or OVO, and that there’d been a mistake with some meter readings. He asked for copies of our most recent bills to sort it out. He seemed to have done his homework on Companies House, mentioned a director’s name, and said he’d call back if the bill issue wasn’t sorted. When I said we’d wait for the actual bills before sending anything, he just hung up. Not sure if it’s a scam or some sort of ID theft since he wanted our bills.

Got two calls from someone saying they were with Eon, wanting to confirm my address and other details. Oddly, they already had our meter number and then asked about our standing charge. I thought, shouldn't they have all this info without asking? When I asked for a contact number to ring back, they gave me 0800 525 631 - but it actually belongs to a dental clinic in Chepstow! Definitely felt like a scam.

BEWARE OF THIS SCAM - NEVER SHARE YOUR EMAIL OR ACCOUNT DETAILS! Today at work I got a call from someone pretending to be British Gas, asking to talk to our accounts payable team. We don’t actually have one, so I told him to email our finance manager and gave him her address. A few minutes later she got an email from ’British Gas’ with a code to reset the account password, saying to ignore if it wasn’t her. Thankfully, this seemed suspicious to us and we just ignored it. If we hadn’t, these con artists could’ve got hold of all our company’s bank info.

Honestly, I just ended the call straight away. It was clearly one of those Indian call centres trying to pull a scam, asking for stuff like meter readings and prices. This one said they were from Smartest Energy, but judging by all the other utility names other folks mentioned, it’s probably a con. Not sure what they’re after exactly - maybe trying to switch your energy provider to get a cut? They already had loads of my details anyway. Either way, it’s definitely dodgy.

Some bloke called claiming to be from our power company, Ecotricity, and came up with some tale about mixing up the postcode. I told him to send me an email about it but then he quickly said their email was blocked right now due to the postcode error. I asked him to ring back later in a few hours, and meanwhile I contacted Ecotricity myself who actually did email me. If he calls again, I’m just ignoring it.

Received a rather concerning call supposedly from our energy provider, claiming that a manual gas reading had been mistakenly uploaded to our account. They mentioned a verification code which they then requested from me, leading them to gain access to my account. The only conclusion we can draw is that it's likely identity theft on their part, as they now possess a utility bill along with some basic payment details.

Someone rang up claiming to be from Total Energies, asking if we’d swapped our meter without notifying them. I told them surely they’d be aware if we’d had a new one fitted. They kept pushing, asking if we’d changed our electric or gas meter, so I told them they don’t provide our gas, so it’s not their concern. Then they started going on about how our usage had gone up - which it hasn’t, I’ve been keeping an eye on it recently because of our carbon footprint. In the end, I just ended the call.

Someone phoned pretending to be from my energy company, SSE, saying my meter readings didn’t match up and maybe my meter was faulty. They asked for my supply number and other details. I told them I’d rather call back on SSE’s official number, but the caller got really annoyed and claimed I’d be stuck in a long queue if I did, and that he’d been specifically told to call me and sort it there and then. When he refused to let me end the call, I just hung up. Afterwards, I rang SSE to report the scam, and they confirmed it was definitely a fraud attempt.
