Watch out if someone opens the call with "Are you able to hear me?" - all they want is to catch you saying "yes" on tape. After that, they might just hang up, but that recording could be used later to pretend you agreed to something, and you'd have no clue you’re being conned. If you reply with something like "I can hear you" instead of "yes," they'll keep pressing with "Can you hear me?" trying to get you to say yes outright. They'll usually give up and hang up once they figure out you’re onto their trick.

Got a call today, 1st April, which already felt a bit dodgy. As soon as I tried to ask a question, they just kept going with their sales spiel, then after a pause, it cut off when I threw in a question they clearly weren’t ready for. I tried to find out whether they were working independently, for the government, or some mix of both. The person on the end was clearly caught off guard, only giving her name and the company she said she represented - some ‘free survey’ for solar panel fitting. Honestly, it smelt like some clumsy bot or a really basic AI doing the rounds. For me, that makes this call feel unsafe.

I even asked point blank if they were human or a bot, but got zero answer. Definitely sketchy.
