I think it was probably one of those annoying calls which redirect you to a pricey number as soon as you pick up. They usually charge under a quid, so it slips past your phone bill without much fuss. Best thing is to block premium rate numbers on your phone. You can't just do it on your own, though - you need to ring your network provider and ask them to set it up for you. Make sure you do this for both your landline and mobiles. The calls might still come through, but once you answer, the line just drops because the transfer to the premium number fails.
