Got a text supposedly from the Waiting List Validation Office about a hospital appointment, coming from the number (028 7034 6242). I tried calling back, but after waiting for ages, I just got a message saying the number wasn’t recognised. Feels like a total scam to me.

This isn’t spam at all. It’s actually the Northern Trust’s outpatient booking team. They normally send a text telling you to ring this number if you want to be removed from the waiting list, especially since the wait times can be ages and sometimes people no longer need the appointment. I gave them a call myself and it’s definitely genuine.

Greetings, all!
I was in a bit of a quandary regarding whether this message was dodgy or not, so I decided to give the Causeway Hospital switchboard a bell. As it turns out, the whole thing is absolutely legit! They kindly forwarded me to the Validation Team, who had all my information in order - and yes, everything was spot on. The appointment had been scheduled quite a while back, about two years ago, which left me a bit bewildered (thanks to those pesky delays caused by long Covid, I had completely lost track of my earlier visit to the GP and subsequent referral).
From the operator's almost whispered “not again”, it was clear she’d been inundated by similar queries from folks in the dark like myself. I figured it best to drop a note here to reassure others as well!

Hey folks. I was a bit iffy at first, thinking the text might be some sort of scam, so I gave Causeway Hospital a bell on their main line. Turns out the call was legit, they connected me straight to the Validation Team who confirmed everything - my info was spot on. The appointment had actually been booked a good couple of years back, which explained why I’d totally forgotten about it (guess I had no idea I got referred by my GP then). When I spoke to the switchboard lady, she muttered something like “not again” under her breath, so looks like loads of people have been ringing up unsure about the same message. I was trying to answer each person who thought their call was a scam, thinking my responses would only go to them. Got this text recently and checked the number - it’s a total scam. Don’t bother replying to it. The message says you’re on some waiting list for PAIN MANAGEMENT at Northern Trust. It asks you to reply YES 2669 to stay on or NO 2669 to be taken off the list. If you don’t reply, they say they’ll just assume you don’t want an appointment. They also give a number - 02870346242 - for questions, but it’s all fake. If you already answered, just forget about it. Stay safe!
