3 yearsI got a call from a bloke with an Indian accent who said his name was "Liam," but the number showed up as coming from Northern Ireland. He claimed he was from British Gas Lite and wanted to replace our meter because apparently, we owed them over £6,000. I told him flat out we didn’t owe a penny and that he should find the meter info for himself, then ring me back with the meter number he meant. Sure enough, he called back in about 30 minutes. He gave me a meter number that we’ve been paying for before, even though it’s not actually ours and has been the subject of a long-winded complaint to British Gas. He seemed pretty knowledgeable - he had my full name, my company name, my mobile number, and even the disputed meter number. I told “Liam” I’d sort things through British Gas directly. Afterwards, I got in touch with British Gas myself and they confirmed via email that no-one from their meter department had called me. So it’s clear this was a scam.LiamNorthern IrelandBritish Gas LiteBritish Gas3 yearsSo I got a call from someone with a strong foreign accent, saying they were ringing on behalf of the National Grid about changing our meter. They gave me loads of details and then started asking for my name, my mobile number, and the name of our company. I told them they should already have that info and that I'd check things out once I got an official letter through the post. Seemed pretty believable at first, but it felt off with all the questions they asked me about stuff they ought to already know.National Grid3 yearsGot a call at my job from someone claiming to be from the national grid about changing our energy meter.
