A colleague of mine got calls from these people saying she had a $6,000 debt and that there was a warrant for her arrest. They didn’t stop ringing and even claimed to be police officers. Total scam, don’t pick up! They’ve got it so clever now, it showed up on my Android as the ATO, which is why I actually answered. Right away, the fake automated message hit me, claiming I owed money. When I pressed the number to sort it out, I could hear all this background noise like a call centre full of scammers, and then one of them asked why I’d called. Seems like these crooks all work from the same place now, running loads of scams at once, and try to get your details first to choose which con to run. Honestly, I wish someone could hack their systems, or worse. These people deserve something bad.

RIP-OFF - This number kept ringing me non-stop, like 5 times in just 3 days. They even tried hiding their caller ID but eventually they showed a number, so I picked up. The guy went straight away on about me owing money to the tax folks, which is rubbish cause I pay my taxes every year without fail. So I just got a phone call from these people claiming I owed £2789 in tax right away. I told them I always file my tax returns properly every year, so I couldn’t understand what was going on. Then, when I mentioned I haven’t been working because I’m battling breast cancer and undergoing chemo, the person told me to go to the post office and wait for instructions on how to pay. Honestly, I was so freaked out at first because I had switched accountants recently after moving house, so I thought maybe something was actually wrong. The stress really hit me hard. In the end, I contacted the police to check if it was a scam and also did a quick Google search to confirm it was bogus.

Just to say, giving out your date of birth and postcode by itself isn’t enough for someone to steal your identity. But I’ve definitely learnt not to share any personal info on the phone. Legit businesses always get in touch through email or send letters in the post. So from now on, I’m keeping my details to myself when called out of the blue.

So, lunchtime today I got a call but I was already on another line so I accidentally ended it quick. Later, curious about the number 02.6216.1111, I rang it back. There was a recorded message warning me that if I received a call like that it could be a scam and told me to report it by ringing 1800.008.540. I went ahead and contacted that 1800 number, which seems legit from the ATO for reporting scams. They asked for my info, filed a report, and told me to block the original 02.62 number since the ATO apparently never tried to reach me. It’s all a bit baffling because the scammer used that 02.62 number, but calling it back just directs you to the ATO scam report line??? Kinda confusing to me, but the 1800 number does show up as official on the ATO website.

Yesterday, my elderly mum got a call from a private number, with someone pretending to be from the ATO. The bloke called himself “Officer Henry Rogers” and told her she owed nearly $4000, saying she had to pay by 5:30pm or the cops would come and arrest her. Mum got really scared and he kept harassing her, telling her to pay with Walmart or other shop vouchers. He was shouting at her and being proper rude, which just made her more distressed. The moment mum mentioned the police, they suddenly hung up. Then today, they rang from 0262161111, still threatening her about some unpaid tax warrant. This time mum just hung up straight away. It’s awful how these scammers pick on our older folks like that. Please make sure your parents know about this!

It’s a total scam. They claim they’re from the ATO and threaten you with arrest within an hour. They also say if you have a lawyer, get them to call instead. I got really confused at first, but luckily I realised it was fake before I sent any money and managed to avoid getting tricked.
