A guy with an Indian accent called and asked for me by name, and then I pretended to be the butler to see who was on the other end. He said his name was John and that he was from Right Home, doing a survey about home energy usage. He gave up and hung up before I could get the butler to pass me the phone.

National Loft Survey rings me up from lots of different numbers, and almost every time it’s someone abroad talking, usually with an Asian accent. They try to confirm my name before anything else. To figure out if they’re actually in the UK, I ask them about the local weather. They mostly just say “thank you for asking” and don’t give much away. After getting loads of calls from them, I just say “no thanks” and hang up.
