11 yearsI got caught out by this one and it turned out to be a proper scam! Someone called Steve rang me up out of the blue claiming there was a new government initiative available in my part of Surrey. They said I could get alarm kit worth £1000 free for my house. I was convinced it was legit until he gave a phone number 02476555005, which didn’t match my usual 01483 area code. I later found out it was actually a Coventry number from a Midlands alarm firm. Instead of receiving £1000 worth of free gear with just a £299 install fee, I had some pushy salesman hanging around my house for more than an hour trying to haggle me into paying £4000! It began with them saying everything was free, then just the £299, and suddenly it skyrocketed to £4000! Total rubbish, a bunch of con artists clearly after retired folk, calling from withheld numbers to catch you off guard. I’m a retired college lecturer myself, and I still can’t believe I let that so-called safety expert into my home.
