They only called me a couple of times but hung up by the time I answered. I’m pretty sure they’ve tried me before. Why don’t the phone providers do something to block these calls? There should be a way to report these sorts of numbers, especially when it’s obvious they’re scammers. Those numbers ought to be blocked and if they charge premium rates when people call back, that money should be kept by the providers or even refunded to the people who got tricked.

Someone rang me wanting me to verify my name. I never give it straight away, always ask who it is and what it’s about first. They said it was regarding my phone line and billing. I said ‘yes’ and then they just ended the call. I’m a bit worried now because I heard they might record you saying yes and then use that to make unauthorised changes on your account.

Over the last couple of days, I've been getting calls that if you don't pick up, the answerphone message says your BT phone bill is unpaid. I've had a few of these and checked straight away with BT, but my bill is set up on direct debit. It's just to scare you and make you panic. If you ring back, they’ll try to get your personal info. I'd suggest using a phone that has an answer machine. If you get a call from a number you don't know, just let it ring through to voicemail and if there's no message left, don't bother calling back. Most of the time, they'll just hang up if you don't pick up. If you're uncertain about who called, you can look the number up on this or a similar website, and block it if needed. Real callers usually leave a message. Also, if someone asks you to press 1 during a call, be careful as it might redirect you to a premium rate line.
