Upon delving deeper, it turned out that uktradeinvest.gov actually exists and is indeed legitimate. It seems we were misled by a chap who gave us the wrong website link when we spoke to him.

Claiming to be the representative of the UK Department for Trade and Investment, they seemed a bit dodgy when we asked for their official website. Instead, they directed us to uktradeinvest.com, which hardly resembles a government site at all. They rambled on about it being part of a government department's online presence, but it all seemed rather fishy to me.
