9 yearsHad a rather amusing experience the other day with a caller who was trying to pose as someone from British Gas’s meter department. The chap, clearly speaking from India, claimed there was an issue flagged last Saturday and proceeded to ask me to verify our electricity meter number. I made him wait for a bit while I rummaged through some paperwork, then cheekily asked him to provide the meter number they supposedly had on file. He rattled off an extensive sequence of digits, which I immediately called out as being the number from my bill-but alas, that was a fib! This appeared to throw him a bit off balance, and he repeated his request for the meter number. I pressed again for them to share their supposed record, and he regurgitated the same long string of numbers. At that moment, 'his superior' jumped on the line and regurgitated the same old script. I'd had enough, though, and told them I was well aware they weren’t from British Gas. They quickly hung up after that. Ah, the joy of toying with these scammers! I can only imagine what might happen if I had divulged the actual meter number at this point.
