I urge everyone to steer clear of these fraudsters. Recently, I was searching for McAfee and found their site through a Google search. The first link seemed entirely legitimate-secure and locked, just like the real deal. So, I downloaded what I thought was their antivirus software. Unfortunately, it turns out I had fallen for a clone site that mimicked McAfee perfectly! Just moments later, a message popped up indicating that ‘a McAfee technician would reach out to you soon’. No sooner had I finished reading that than my phone rang. A man claiming to be ‘Jeff’ from McAfee was on the other end. He managed to provide his tech ID, email, and all sorts of credentials. He asked for permission to access my computer to conduct a diagnostic scan, and, foolishly, I allowed it. He showed me a frightening array of supposed issues with my system, claiming numerous hacking attempts and asserting my network wasn’t safe. He really frightened me, making it seem like my computer was in dire straits. After ‘fixing’ these so-called problems, he insisted that I needed to pay for additional protection on top of the McAfee Live Safe he claimed to have installed. In a panic, I purchased a separate security package for my network, paying him £169.99 via PayPal. I felt grateful and thanked him profusely before ending the call, firmly believing I had just helped secure my computer. It now seems ridiculous in retrospect, but how was I to know? I was interacting with what I thought was McAfee! Let me set the record straight: - McAfee will *never* call you. - They don’t do lifetime protection sales. - At this moment, no technical agents from McAfee operate in the UK. If you ever receive a call from this number in Southampton-do not engage! 'Jeff' even disabled my security settings and managed to install a monitoring app that allowed him to spy on my activities and access my personal information. Thankfully, things are back to normal now, with my security restored and the unwanted files removed. Yet, I’ve sadly lost £169.99 in the process. It’s nearly impossible to discern if you’re on the actual McAfee website-it's a flawless imitation. The best advice? Call McAfee directly and allow them to install your protection. Purchasing online is a risky gamble!
