My partner isn’t from the UK, so when they rang, I answered the phone. They claimed to be from HMRC and told me that a former employer hadn’t properly sorted his tax when he was working through an agency. It really frightened us both. They said he owed nearly £5,000 and warned that the police would arrive within the hour to freeze his bank and seize any possessions or car - if we had one. I tried to get it sorted, and he transferred me to someone else, but the amount owed had changed. The first bloke mentioned a possible 7-month jail sentence and a £49,000 fine if it went to court, but the second one said 9 months and £30,000 fine. Definitely watch out for calls like this.
