I missed the first call so I called back. A guy with an Indian accent picked up right away (no automated voice or anything) and claimed he was from HMRC, asking for my info to figure out why I was called. Then he told me he’s really busy and if I wasn’t going to share my details, I was just wasting his time and he needed to move on with his busy day.

Just like others have mentioned, I received a call purporting to be from HMRC regarding a tax refund linked to a PPI claim. They had all my personal details like my name and address, which raised a red flag for me. I swiftly ended the call and decided to look up the number online.

This has scam written all over it. It’s shocking how low some folks will go, taking advantage of people especially now.

Some person rang me pretending to be from the HMRC saying I’d paid 42.9% tax wrong on my PPI payout. Weirdly, he already had my name, address and phone number. When he asked for my email, I said no way. He then claimed he couldn’t steal money from my email. I told him I never even had a PPI payout and told him to "**** off, you scammer." He hung up straight away.

When it comes to telemarketers and those pesky unknown automated calls, I've found a rather effective trick. Just answer the phone, but refrain from uttering a word. Most of the time, the automated systems will promptly disconnect. If you happen to say "Hello," they often hang up shortly after if you don’t continue the conversation. Trust me, it’s a method that proves to be quite effective!
