It appears they're still on the prowl. Just got a call from a chap named 'Harry Jackson' claiming to be with 'Microsoft.' He said he was calling from 100 Victoria Street in London, which, to be fair, is the actual headquarters for Microsoft in the capital. However, he provided me with a rather unusual number to ring back, 0208 099 1655, instead of the usual 0844 one you'd expect from the company. He prompted me to pull up eventvwr, which he insisted was crucial-never mind the fact that the errors it shows are completely normal and not indicative of any malware. Nevertheless, that wasn’t the spin he put on it. Then, he directed me to www.ammyy.com, stating with a laugh that it was 'Application Microsoft Modulation.' Oh, the cheek! It's simply a software development firm. I pressed him on why he wasn't guiding me to an official Microsoft site, and he muttered something about protecting other users, though couldn't elucidate why folks using AMMYY wouldn’t face similar risks. Had I not been alert, he would have likely tried to coax me into downloading a Remote Desktop tool to grant him total access to my machine. Naturally, I was not about to hand over that kind of control, and neither should you! He had the audacity to say that Microsoft was covering this because I’m a ‘valued customer’-one measly copy of XP and Office in five years hardly qualifies! Ha! His ultimate goal was to swindle me into paying for unnecessary services. It's a relentless ruse. He consistently lied about his affiliation with Microsoft, when in reality, he clearly wasn’t! He claimed to be based in London, yet the whole thing reeked of deceit. Every technical assertion he made was a fabrication. Don't let yourself be taken in. These individuals are nothing more than crooks on the other end of the line. If you feel daring, waste their time-my call lasted 21 minutes, but I've heard of cases going over an hour (some even posted on YouTube). These scammers are earning miserable wages in back-alley call centres in Kolkata. If by chance you’ve been naïve and permitted them access to your system, a thorough cleanup will be essential-look it up online for guidance. Only follow their advice if you’re absolutely confident in your tech skills. A handy trick is to tell them you're using a Mac or Linux; that usually sends them packing. Alternatively, just hang up whenever it suits you. We really need a clear category for this kind of call-let’s call it what it is: a Scam!
