Received a couple of calls from someone claiming to be 'Sarah Wilson from HMRC', warning me about 'serious consequences' if I ignored their calls. After having a good chuckle at the voice which honestly sounded like it was recorded on an old 80s computer, I was sure it was a scam and blocked the number. They tried again but it went straight to voicemail thanks to the block, and I caught the tail end of the same robotic message. Just so everyone knows, they've now changed their caller ID to: 0207 043 1670.

The voice on the line was unmistakably synthetic-akin to the late Professor Hawking in its cadence and tone, yet somehow attempting to convey a feminine touch. I was advised to ring this number to get in touch with HM Revenue and Customs, as my name was supposedly linked to some matter, with threats of consequences should I fail to make the call. I can only assume that if I did pick up, a recorded message would inform me of an outstanding debt. Rest assured, I won't be engaging with that automated voice. I can confidently assert my humanity, something that device might struggle to claim for itself!

I got a rather alarming automated call today, claiming there was a serious matter linked to my name. They urged me to ring a specific number, warning of potential legal repercussions otherwise. Honestly, I can’t quite remember the name they mentioned, as I was completely taken aback by it all.

Got a voicemail on answerphone today 12.4.18. It was an automated message, female American accent, a wee bit difficult to catch everything. Seemed like it was "calling from California to warn that your phone line might be at risk - press 1 for help or 2 for more info or something." I’ve blocked the number and just ignored whatever they said.

I received a rather daunting automated call today, claiming that a significant fraud case has been initiated under my name. The recording urged me to contact a specific number immediately, warning that failure to do so could result in substantial legal fees. They implied it was from a governmental department, which only heightened my concern. Quite unsettling, to say the least!

I just got a recorded call, sounded like a computer voice, saying I was being investigated and had to call a number or else I’d get into trouble with the law. Didn’t bother ringing back, just googled the number and ended up here. What’s weird is I hardly ever use this new BT landline and it’s ex-directory. The only ones who have my number are BT themselves - I haven’t shared it online or even told my family. So either it was a random bot dialing me, or BT’s got a real privacy problem.

Just went through the comments here. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences. I missed a call earlier today and got a voicemail around 11:04am from someone claiming to be Wilson from HM Revenue & Customs. They said I needed to ring back on 0208 089 4200 or have my solicitor do so, otherwise I’d face legal trouble! The message sounded like it was from a robot. I tried ringing a few times back (with number withheld), but it was always busy. Really appreciate all the comments about this number - was proper worried at first.

I totally agree with what others have said. Got a creepy robo-call with a threatening tone saying something like 'or face the consequences' finishing with 'good bye'. Honestly, Arnie did a better job than that. HMRC is definitely not messing around. If anyone important sees this, please track these people down and give them a taste of their own medicine. Hey - I just got a call and stupidly rang back. They were threatening me with £3500 or I’d be arrested today for fraud. Only when they asked me to send money to a weird account did I realise it was a con. No way HMRC would ask for payment to some random third party. BE WARNED, FOLKS!!

These phone scam people are awful, almost funny in a way, but it’s worrying for anyone who might fall for it. They really should be taken to court. Said they were from HMRC. When I asked how to make the payment, they just said any method is fine. Total con, so I told them to go ahead and send the police to take me and the cash away. They said it’d take around 2 hours, but after 6 hours, no sign of anyone. The police here don’t operate like that, so it's obvious these scammers aren’t even from the UK. Such muppets.

I answered the call but it cut off right after I said ‘hello’. A few minutes later I called back and some robotic voice claimed to be from HMRC, saying a colleague had tried to reach me about needing my lawyer’s details. They said I had a criminal case coming at 4:30pm over some tax issues from 2012 to 2016. They asked if anyone had informed me before, and I just told them no and laughed.
