02080773119 - BE WARNED, THIS IS A SCAMMER. My elderly mum got two calls from this number, with a bloke called Stephen Butler claiming HMRC were suing her. He told her to ring the number to deal with some "claim" against her. At the end of the message, he creepy said “take care” like it was a threat. Proper dodgy! If HMRC had an issue, they’d write to you with a reference, no random calls. We’ve reported it to Citizens Advice and TalkTalk and they confirmed it’s definitely a scam! Don’t answer or call back.

We've received multiple calls from this number now. Each time I pick up, an automated voice states, "This is a message for you from HMRC. I require you or your lawyer (I think?) to get back to me before we initiate any legal proceedings against you. My name is Steven Butler from HMRC, and you can reach my department at 02080773119. That’s 02080773119. Have a good day and take care." This recording has also been left on our answering machine. My partner attempted to ring the number, but it didn't even connect. From the outset, we were convinced this was a bizarre scam call, so we tried contacting the real HMRC to verify and alert them, but he was stuck waiting in a queue for far too long!

A mate of mine, who's 84, got a ring from this Steven Butler bloke. It really rattled her, but luckily she had the presence of mind to alert the police. They confirmed it was a scam, although it left her pretty disturbed.

Some bloke called Steven Butler - or maybe Butterworth - dropped a message on my elderly mum and dad’s answerphone. He said he was from HMRC and warned that they’d take action if a payment wasn’t sorted right away. The number he left was 02080 773119, same as above. Thankfully, my mum phoned me instead of ringing the number back, and I told her that HMRC don’t phone people like that - they always send a letter first if there’s an issue.
