I received a call from someone who asked to chat with me, but right from the off, I was put on high alert as he mispronounced my surname. His English seemed decent, yet there was a distinct hint of an Indian accent in his voice. Rather than revealing my identity, I decided to probe him a bit and inquired who he was and what the purpose of his call was. He claimed to have my name on a list of council housing residents and wanted to know if any repairs were required for my property. This really threw me as I’m not a council tenant at all. I pressed him for clarification, and he then opted to reword his query to cover both council and private tenants. When I asked him about the source of his information, he abruptly hung up on me.
