Got a call from a call centre claiming to represent “The Register” trying to persuade me to accept an IT report by email. I'm familiar with the company and believe it’s genuine (if it’s actually them), but their approach is pretty irritating.

I've had this number ring me a few times, but when I pick up there's just silence on the other end.

There was loads of noise in the background, sounded like a big gathering or party. Then a woman, maybe Indian, who sounded quite sloshed, said “hello.” I replied, and she just kept repeating “hello.” Right then, me missus grabbed the phone on the other line and said hello too. After that, the caller claimed she was from BT talking about my internet, and just suddenly cut off the call!
