I recently had a rather dodgy experience with a phone call that turned out to be a complete scam. A lady rang me, going on about my excellent payment history, particularly regarding council tax. She claimed to be calling on behalf of some supposed British council tax department, which, let me tell you, doesn’t even exist! When I asked her for a contact number and the address of this so-called department, she abruptly hung up on me. Please, for the love of all that’s good, do not divulge any of your banking details to strangers over the phone. Make sure to reach out to your local council and report these fraudulent attempts!

Beware of this number! They masquerade as the council tax department and cunningly attempt to extract your personal information and bank details. It’s definitely a scam, so steer clear!

We received a call from this number earlier today as well. Just as he was about to inquire about verifying our details, we turned the tables and asked when he’d be providing our account information. And wouldn’t you know it, the call suddenly dropped!

My folks received a call from this number claiming that certain individuals were eligible for a Council Tax refund because they were deemed 'model citizens'. The woman on the line introduced herself as Emmy Murray. However, as soon as my dad mentioned that she preferred a cheque (because sharing bank details was off the table), she gave him a reference number and asked him to ring back on: 020-7043 190? (it seemed a digit was off). Just a heads up: Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) usually sends a letter before making contact!
