It seems to be something from HM Revenue and Customs, yet the voice on the line is distinctly American. Quite strange, isn't it?

I received a recorded message featuring a woman with an American accent, insisting that I urgently press 1. The caller went so far as to threaten me with legal repercussions should I not comply, all while posing as if they were from HMRC.

I got a phone call from someone claiming to be with the tax office. They told me I owed £18,000 and that my driving licence and passport were suspended (which is odd because my passport isn't even from the UK or EU). While I was still on the call, I quickly searched the number online and as soon as I questioned them, they just hung up.

02079470242 rang me saying they were from HMRC and claimed I owed £3900 in underpaid tax from 2025 to 3018. They threatened me with arrest if I didn't pay up, saying I’d ignored their earlier calls. I wasn’t sure at first so I said I’d check with payroll, but they told me I couldn’t speak to anyone else and that I’d get arrested if I didn’t cooperate. I just ended the call then. Total scam!

I got a call from +44 20 7947 0242, and it was a lady named Monica Todd with a strange American accent. Her English was really bad, and she said she was from the Inland Revenue. Sounded quite pushy and told me I had to ring her back or my lawyer, or else I'd “deal with legal trouble!” It was pretty intimidating.

Got a ring from 020 7947 0242, and it was some supposed HMRC thing. This automated American lass was going on about ringing them back or else I’d be in trouble. Honestly, they're less likely to find WMDs in Iraq than these folks getting their story straight.

A clever move is to just say hi and wait to see what they reply, usually they hang up straight away because they think it’s the authorities calling.

This number rang me at 13:47 today, but I didn’t pick up. They left a voicemail, but for some reason, my phone's usual voicemail player couldn’t play it. Then I accidentally hit the back button and suddenly a man answered, but he didn’t speak for long. When I asked who he was, he claimed to be from HMRC before hanging up. Later, I saw a voice message and played it - it said it was HMRC warning me about legal trouble if I ignored it. Definitely a scam, avoid replying and just block or delete this number.

Just got a call like that not long ago. Some bloke claiming I owed tax and they’d seize my passport and belongings. Asked him to give me an exact date for all this, but he couldn’t. Then he threatened the cops would arrive in 45 minutes. I told him I’d ring the police myself, and he started swearing like mad down the phone. It’s crazy how these scammers can still do this and nobody stops them. Blocked straight away.

I got a sketchy call from 0207 947 0242 claiming to be from HMRC. The guy didn’t sound legit at all. When I asked for some ID, he just told me to check HMRC’s website. He said to scroll to the bottom for a special line for agents, which listed 0345 300 3943 for Tax Credits. He promised to ring me back from that number, and he actually did. Had a call from someone pretending to be the inland revenue, threatening me with “or face the consequences” if I didn’t ring back (yep, they actually said that). It’s so worrying because people who are vulnerable might get scared and end up getting tricked. Just because they fall for it doesn’t make them stupid or deserving of a scam, like one of the other comments around here unfortunately implied.
